Rowan County

November 3rd, 2009

Rowan County is a county located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of 2000, the population was 130,340. Its county seat is Salisbury.

The county was formed in 1753 from the northern part of Anson County. It was named for Matthew Rowan, acting governor of North Carolina from 1753 to 1754.

Originally, Rowan County was a vast territory with an indefinite western boundary. Reductions in its extent began in 1770, when the eastern part of it was combined with the western part of Orange County to become Guilford County, North Carolina. In 1771 the northeastern part of what remained of Rowan County became Surry County. In 1777 the western part of Rowan County became Burke County. In 1788 the western part of the now much smaller Rowan County became Iredell County. In 1822 the eastern part of the still shrinking county became Davidson County. Finally, in 1836 the part of Rowan County north of the South Yadkin River became Davie County. The “250 Fest” celebrating the 250th anniversary of Rowan County occurred in 2003.

Randolph County is located in the Piedmont section of central North Carolina, a region of gently rolling hills and woodlands. However, the central and western parts of the county contain the Uwharrie Mountains and the Caraway Mountains. These two ranges are the remnants of a much-higher range of ancient peaks. Today they rarely top 1,000 feet above sea level, yet due to the relative low terrain around them, they still rise 200 – 500 feet  above their base. The highest point in Randolph County is Shepherd Mountain, a peak in the Caraways. The North Carolina Zoo is located atop Purgatory Mountain, one of the peaks of the Uwharries.

Greensboro, North Carolina

October 6th, 2009

Greensboro is a city in the state of North Carolina. It is the third-largest city, by population, in the state and the largest city in Guilford County and the surrounding Piedmont Triad metropolitan region. At the 2000 census, Greensboro was home to 223,891 residents. At 7-1-2009, its estimated population was 257,997.

The city is located at the intersection of two major interstate highways (I-85 and I-40) in the Piedmont  region of central North Carolina.

In 2003, the previous Greensboro – Winston-Salem – High Point metropolitan statistical area was re-defined by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget, resulting in the formation of the Greensboro-High Point MSA and the Winston-Salem MSA. The 2008 population estimate for the Greensboro-High Point MSA was 709,751. The Greensboro – Winston-Salem – High Point combined statistical area, popularly referred to as the Piedmont Triad, had an estimated population of 1,603,101 in 2008 making it the 30th largest metropolitan area in the USA.. Source: US Bureau of the Census, Annual Estimates of the Population

In 1808, Greensborough (as was the spelling prior to 1895) was planned around a central courthouse square to succeed the nearby town of Guilford Court House as the county seat. This act moved the county courts closer to the geographical center of the county, a location more easily reached by the majority of the county’s citizens.

Much has changed since then. Greensboro has grown to be part of a thriving metropolitan area called the Triad, which encompasses three major cities (Greensboro, High Point, and Winston-Salem) and more than a million people. Greensboro evolved from a small center of government to an early 1900s textile and transportation hub, and today is emerging as one of the South’s up-and-coming centers for relocating businesses. Two centuries later Greensboro is still collecting accolades for its beauty and livability. In 2004 the Department of Energy  awarded Greensboro with entry into the Clean Cities Hall of Fame.

Guilford County, North Carolina

August 7th, 2009

Founded in 1771 was the county of Guilford. It covers an area of North Carolina of 658 square miles. The county seat is Greensboro. Guilford County got its name from Francis North, 1st Earl of Guilford who was the father of Frederick North, Lord North. North was the British Prime Minister from 1770 until 1782.

Some of the early settlers were English Quakers, who settled along the Haw and Eno Rivers. Many of the descendents of the Quakers are still living in the county to this day.

Guilford County is rich in history pertaining to slavery and civil rights. Many of the residents of Guilford County were opposed to slavery before the Civil War. It was a stop over for the famous Underground Railroad. The Underground Railroad provided escaped slaves a route to freedom. The founder of the railway was a resident and native of Guilford County, Levi Coffin. History records show that Levi was responsible for personally assisting over 2,000 slaves escape to their freedom before the war.

What is known as the University of North Carolina at Greensboro started out in 1891 as the state’s first and only public supported institution of higher learning and housed only women, in 1932 it became known as the Women’s College of North Carolina and was the third largest women’s university in the world, then in 1963 the final name change was made to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, because this is when they began to admit men into the school.

Guilford County is known for the 1960 incident, which led to a major development in the American Civil Rights movement, when four black students decided to do a sit-in at the Woolworth’s lunch counter in Greensboro, which was an all white agenda. The students were arrested, but their actions led to other college students both black and white to take a stand against racism. This incident was a major stand for the desegregation in Gilford County and became known as the Greensboro Four. This was significant as it spread to 54 cities in 9 states and Woolworths agreed to desegregate all their other lunch counters, and other restaurants followed suit.
