Formed in 1764 from portions of Bladen County and New Hanover County, Brunswick County in North Carolina was named for the colonial port of Brunswick Town, which stands today in ruins. Brunswick County covers an area of 1,050 square miles and has Bolivia as its county seat.
One little known fact about Brunswick County is a place called Bird Island. The unusualness about this area is that you could encounter someone taking in it’s nature and beauty in the nude. Now nudity sunbathing is illegal in the state of NC, but the local residents seem to be tolerant of the fact that some people just like to be naturists. The beach is very secluded and it is patrolled by law enforcement using off-road vehicles. Several complaints over the past few years, however have the authorities being pressed into enforcing state laws regarding nudity. The far southern tip of Bird Island extends in the Little River Inlet of South Carolina therefore making it difficult to really say who has legal jurisdiction.
Brunswick County has a total of 19 cities and towns which are Bald Head Island, Belville, Boiling Spring Lakes, Bolivia, Calabash, Carolina Shores, Caswell Beach, Holden Beach, Leland, Navassa, Northwest, Oak Island, Ocean Isle Beach, Sandy Creek, Shallotte, Southport, St. James, Sunset Beach and Varnamtown. Brunswick County is a very popular summer vacation spot for people from all around the world.
