In 1911 portions of Cumberland County and Robeson County became known as Hoke County. The county was named after a Confederate general in the American Civil War by the name of Robert F. Hoke. The county seat is Raeford. Hoke County covers an area of 392 square miles of which only 1 square mile is water.
There are seven cities or towns located in Hoke Count,y which include Ashley Heights, Bowmore, Dundarrach, Five Points, Raeford, Rockfish and Silver City. The Fort Bragg Military Reservation is located within Hoke County.
One of the more well known historical facts about Hoke county is the arrest of Charles E. “Croatan” Whitmeyer in July of 1952 for bootlegging, when he delivered 20 gallons of moonshine from Pamlico County
