The Cherryville Chamber of Commerce

October 13th, 2009

First known as White Pines, Cherryville was settled in 1792 by German, Dutch and Scotch-Irish pioneers. The original grants of land were made by Governor Samuel Ashe. During the 1700′s , Old Post Road served as a main thorough-fare between Charlotte, NC and Spartanburg, SC as well as a highway connection between Washington, DC and important locations in the South. The town served as a water and coal stop on the Carolina Central (later Seaboard Coastal) Railroad line during the 1860s. Along the railroad, a local resident named Black planted cherry trees, and the train engineers soon called the settlement “Cherryville”, a name under which the town was incorporated in 1881.  Agriculture was Cherryville’s main economic base for many years; however, during the 1800′s the town established itself in the textile industry, following the mill village concept that still exists to some extent. One custom shared by established residents and new is the greeting of each New Year with a chant and the shooting of muskets.

Cherokee Welcome Center

September 30th, 2009

When you visit Cherokee, North Carolina, you can almost imagine yourself  living this way. Here, the same mountains where the Cherokees have maintained their traditions for generations surround you. People who proudly preserve a culture far older than the new nation that surrounds them, welcome you. The Cherokees believe that they have always lived in Western North Carolina. Indeed, finely crafted stone tools and fluted spear-points confirm that ancient people lived here more than 11,000 years ago, at the end of the last Ice Age. Ancient Cherokee tales describe hunts of the mastodons that once foraged through the upland spruce and fir.
